The Hourglass: Peninsula
The Hourglass: Peninsula is a last-person-standing style endurance event held at Soldotna Creek Park (also known as Soldotna River Park) in Soldotna, Alaska. The competition uses a unique shrinking clock format where participants must complete a specific loop or task within a set time period. The first round begins with a 30-minute time limit. Each subsequent round decreases the available time by 1 minute. Participants who finish their required work before the cutoff earn the right to start the next round, while those who miss the cutoff are finished.
The event offers several distinct categories for adult participants:
- Run: A 2-mile loop to be completed each round.
- Ruck: A 1-mile loop carrying a weighted pack (35 lb for men, 20 lb for women).
- Hybrid Athlete: A 2-mile run loop plus 10 burpees each round.
- Loaded Carry: An 800-meter sandbag carry (60 lb for men, 45 lb for women).
There is also a Youth Division for participants aged 8-11, which follows the same shrinking time format with modified distances and loads:
- Kids Run: 1 mile per round.
- Kids Ruck: 0.5 miles with a recommended weight of 10-15 lb.
- Kids Hybrid: 1 mile plus 5 burpees.
- Kids Carry: A 400-meter sandbag carry starting at 20-30 lb.
The top finisher in each category receives an award. Additionally, the top five participants in each category qualify for a larger championship event in Anchorage. Participants are responsible for bringing their own weighted packs for rucking and are encouraged to wear trail shoes and weather-appropriate layers.
