Event overview

The Hardmoors 55 is an ultramarathon held on 21 March 2026. The route runs from Guisborough to Helmsley and is approximately 55 miles with over 2700 m of ascent. The minimum age is 18. Entry places are limited and entry fees vary by date; the entry fee includes a compulsory OpenTracking tracker. The race is designed to be run unsupported; basic food and water are provided at some checkpoints and hot drinks at a minimum of two checkpoints.

Route, checkpoints and rules

About 95% of the course follows the Cleveland Way National Trail. Key checkpoint and drop-bag locations include Roseberry Topping, Kildale Village Hall (drop bag, 11 miles), Clay Bank (20 miles), Osmotherley Village Hall (drop bag, 30 miles), Sneck Yate Bank (35 miles), White Horse (44 miles) and the finish at Helmsley. There are checkpoint cut-off times expressed as hours on course (for example Kildale 4 hrs, Clay Bank 6 hrs, Osmotherley 9.5 hrs, White Horse 13.5 hrs, finish 16 hrs). Runners must carry a specified mandatory kit list for the full race, including waterproof jacket and trousers, spare warm layer, headtorch, whistle, survival bag, map, and minimum water, plus a fully charged phone. Random spotchecks will be carried out; missing certain items attracts time penalties or disqualification. Support crews are not allowed. One support runner is permitted from Sutton Bank to the finish but may not carry the competitor's equipment. Two non-returnable drop bags are allowed and must be kept small.
