The Great Ferry Race
The Great Ferry Race is a half marathon that begins with participants walking onto a ferry in downtown Seattle and crossing to Bainbridge Island on a scenic 35 minute ride. Runners assemble on the ferry vehicle deck and walk off to start the course from the ferry dock. The route travels around Bainbridge Island and uses parks and trails such as Grand Forest and Battle Point Park.
The course surface is a mix of pavement and groomed trail, described as approximately two thirds road and one third trail, with about 1400 feet of total elevation gain. The trails are not technical but involve varied terrain, and the event notes that this course is hillier than many other Orca Running events. Five aid stations are placed evenly on the course and supply water, GU energy gels, and Tailwind electrolytes.
The event is conducted cupless to reduce waste; participants are advised to use a handheld bottle, a hydration pack, or a small reusable cup. Free gear check is provided; bags can be dropped on the ferry vehicle deck or at the registration tent at the Winslow Ferry Terminal for those not riding the ferry. Packet pickup and t shirt distribution occur at designated race tables and the finish area. The race supports local organizations including Kid's In Concert and Bainbridge Youth Services and lists Snake River Savers as a charity partner.
