The Drop is a unique navigation challenge. Dropped at a secret location, you must find your own way back to Harrogate with no map, GPS, or route. Choose between 6, 10, or 15 mile distances, measured straight-line, for a test of self-reliance.

Event Concept

The Drop is a navigation challenge. It is not a race with a marked route. Participants are taken to an unknown drop location and must find their way back to the event centre in Harrogate entirely on their own.

How It Works

At registration, participants must hand over all electronic devices, watches, and navigational aids. They receive a race number and a sealed emergency bag. They are then transported by bus to the drop location while wearing blackout blindfolds (or approved alternatives). Upon arrival, the blindfolds are removed and the challenge begins.

Challenge Distances

Participants choose from one of three distances. All distances are measured "as the crow flies" from the drop point to the finish; the actual running distance will be longer.

  • The Drop 15 Mile: The original, longest, and most challenging version.
  • The Drop 10 Mile: A shorter version with the same rules and deployment.
  • The Drop 6 Mile: Exclusively for non-locals. Participants who live in or regularly train in the area are not permitted to enter this option and may be moved to a longer distance.

Rules and Equipment

During the challenge, participants have no map, GPS, compass, or provided route. All navigation must be done without these aids. The core rules are:

  • No GPS devices (they may only record if sealed inside the emergency bag).
  • No unauthorised maps (only maps provided by the organisers, if any are provided).
  • Travel on foot only (no transport).
  • The seal on the emergency bag must not be broken.

Additional Information

An optional live GPS tracking system is available for participants to use and share their location with others. All trackers must be returned after the event. Participants are responsible for reading the event's FAQ for details on start times, cut-off times, required kit, and safety information. The event centre is Up & Running Harrogate on Station Parade.
