The Drop - Harrogate
The Drop is a stripped-back navigation challenge held at Up & Running Harrogate, 16 Station Parade, Harrogate HG1 1UE on 21/03/2027. The event has no route markers, directions, or reassurance; participants are taken to an unknown location and must find their own way back to the event centre.
Distances offered:
- 15 miles - original option with longer decision making and sustained fatigue.
- 10 miles - shorter format with the same rules and restrictions.
- 6 miles - non-locals only to remove local knowledge advantage.
At registration participants hand over all electronic devices, watches, and navigational aids. Each person receives a race number and a sealed emergency bag that must be carried for the duration. Deployment is by bus while wearing blackout blindfolds or approved alternatives; when the blindfolds are removed the challenge begins and navigation is the participant's responsibility.
Rules include no GPS unless sealed inside the emergency bag, no unauthorised maps, on foot only, and disqualification if the emergency bag seal is broken. Distances are measured as the crow flies so actual routes will be significantly longer. Entries may be checked and local participants may be moved to the 10 or 15 mile options.
An optional live GPS tracker is available for safety and sharing. Trackers are generally accurate within 5 metres but can be affected by tall buildings and signal black spots. All trackers must be returned or a replacement fee applies. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
