Event Overview
The Drop - Darlington is a navigation challenge event. Participants are taken from the event center at Up & Running in Darlington to an undisclosed drop location. Their only objective is to find their own way back on foot. There are no route markers, directions, or provided maps. GPS devices and other navigation aids are not allowed during the challenge.
Distances
There are three versions of the event:
- 6 miles (as the crow flies): This shorter option is strictly for participants who do not live in the area, do not regularly train there, and have no strong local route knowledge.
- 10 miles (as the crow flies)
- 15 miles (as the crow flies)
The 15-mile version is described as the original and toughest format. Distances are measured as the crow flies, meaning the actual distance traveled by a participant will be longer.
Event Process
At registration, participants must hand over all electronic devices, watches, and navigational aids. They receive a race number and a sealed emergency bag that must be carried unopened. Participants board a bus wearing blackout blindfolds (or approved alternatives like safety goggles) and are driven to the unknown drop location. When the blindfolds are removed, the timing starts.
Rules and Equipment
The event has strict rules: no GPS use (devices may only record if sealed in the emergency bag), no unauthorized maps, and travel on foot only. Breaking the seal on the emergency bag results in disqualification. Participants have no map, GPS, route information, help, or compass once they begin.
An optional live GPS tracking system is available for participants to use and share their location with others. Trackers must be returned at the end of the event or a replacement fee applies. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
