The Drop - Edinburgh
The Drop is a stripped-back navigation challenge hosted from Up and Running, 20 Queensferry Street, Edinburgh. Participants are driven, blindfolded, to an undisclosed drop location and must find their own way back to the event centre without route instructions, markers, or reassurance. The event operates without maps, GPS, compasses, or external help once participants leave the bus.
Distances offered include:
- 6 miles for non-locals only
- 10 miles core Drop distance
- 15 miles extended core distance
At registration participants hand over electronic devices, watches, and navigational aids and receive a race number and a sealed emergency bag to carry for the duration. Deployment involves boarding a bus and using blackout blindfolds or approved alternatives. When blindfolds are removed the participant’s time starts and every route decision is their responsibility. Rules include on foot only and no unauthorised maps; breaking the emergency bag seal leads to disqualification. Devices may record activity only if sealed inside the emergency bag.
Organisers offer optional live GPS tracking for safety and convenience; it is not included in the entry fee. Trackers are accurate to around 5 metres but can be affected by tall buildings. All trackers must be returned or a replacement fee of £175 will apply. Organisers retain additional safety features not accessible to participants.
