The Drop - Edinburgh
The Drop is a navigation challenge based at Up and Running, 20 Queensferry Street, Edinburgh, EH2 4QW. Participants are blindfolded and transported to an undisclosed drop location. When blindfolds are removed, the clock starts and each person must find their own way back to the event centre without navigational aids.
Distances are measured as the crow flies; actual routes will be significantly longer. Event options:
- 6 miles: open only to non-locals.
- 10 miles: core Drop distance.
- 15 miles: longer core option with greater distance and decision making.
At registration participants hand over electronic devices, watches, and navigational aids. Each person receives a race number and a sealed emergency bag that must remain intact during the event. Rules include no GPS unless the device is sealed inside the emergency bag, no unauthorised maps, and travel on foot only. Breaking the emergency bag seal or using forbidden aids leads to disqualification.
An optional live GPS tracking system is available for convenience and safety. Trackers are accurate within about 5 metres but can be affected by tall buildings and poor placement. All trackers must be returned after the event or a £175 replacement fee will apply. Entry fees range from £45 to £63. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
