Event Overview
The Derby Run in Memory of Justin Lopes is a community run taking place at Terry Sanford High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina. This is the event's 9th annual iteration. The proceeds benefit local children's charities, including The Child Advocacy Center in Fayetteville, Cy’s World Foundation, and the Justin Richard Lopes Memorial Scholarship.
Distances
Multiple timed and untimed events are offered:
- 10K Run/Walk
- 5K Run/Walk
- 1 Mile Run/Walk
- Kids 50 Yard Dash (for participants 10 years old and under; free entry, but the child must be registered for another paid event)
Course Details
Both the 5K and 10K courses start at Terry Sanford High School. They run through the Haymount area and the Fayetteville Technical Community College campus, finishing near the school's baseball field. The 5K route is described as flat terrain, while the 10K route includes some hills. The course is stroller-friendly, and leashed dogs are welcome.
Activities and Awards
In addition to the races, the event features activities such as face painting and a selfie station. A silent auction is also mentioned. Participants are encouraged to wear Derby-themed hats or costumes. Awards are given for the best costume, best decorated hat, and best decorated stroller. There is also an award for the first dog to finish.
All finishers of the 1 Mile, 5K, and 10K events receive a finisher medal. Race shirts are guaranteed for participants who register by March 30, 2026. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
