The Big Schloss
The Big Schloss is a single clockwise loop trail run of 33.3 miles in the George Washington National Forest on the West Virginia side of the Virginia border, south of Wardensville and west of Woodstock. The route circles Trout Run Valley and combines single-track trails with some dirt roads. Total ascent and descent for the course is 6,150 feet.
Three aid stations are located along the course: Bucktail Trail Head (8.1 miles), Stony Creek Trail Head (18.8 miles), and Wolf Gap (24.7 miles). The route features the ascent of Big Schloss about two thirds of the way into the loop, offering panoramic 360° views of surrounding ridges and valleys. The run starts and finishes at Picnic Pavilion A in the Trout Pond Recreation Area.
Entry is open but limited to 60 runners; a waitlist may be developed if the event fills. In keeping with event tradition, participants are asked to bring a food or drink item to contribute to the common aid. After the run there is grilling at the finish and camping at the adjacent Trout Pond campground is common.
This event takes place in remote terrain. No medical personnel or medical supplies are provided along the course, at aid stations, or at the finish; runners are responsible for their own health and safety. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
