Ras Tarrenhendre Fell Race
Ras Tarrenhendre is scheduled for 30th January 2027 as the second race in the Meirionnydd Winter Race Series. The event is a circular fell race of 6 miles with 2000' of ascent and carries the WFRA Race Grade: AS/LK/PM/SER/NS.
The course climbs from under 50 m above sea level to the 634 m summit of Tarrenhendre. The route rises through forestry to a ridge that circles before descending into a large cwm and passing old slate quarries. Much of the lower cwm follows forest trail, while two single-track climbs lead to the fell and a third exposed climb reaches the summit. A moorland descent leads to the eastern corner of the cwm and then the course drops through steep, boggy forest paths to the quarry bottom. The final section includes a couple of miles of trail running back to the start.
Race headquarters are at Abergynolwyn Village Hall, where homemade soup is included in the entry and cakes are provided by club members and friends. Navigation on the route is described as straightforward and in fair weather the route can serve as a first fell race.
