Event overview
The Winter Run to the Castle Ultra offers two point-to-point distances:
- 42 miles (Ultra)
- 27 miles (Marathon)
The route runs from the coastal village of Aberdyfi to Harlech (approx 42 miles) and passes Tywyn, Fairbourne, the Fairbourne bridge, and Barmouth. The course surface is a mixture of beach, tracks, and pavements and is waymarked. Entry includes a fully recced course, food and drinks at four separate checkpoints, and a finishers medal; belt buckles are awarded instead of the traditional medal for returners to the Castle. Results are published online after the race. The race has a 12-hour time limit.
Logistics and entry
Race HQ is Aberdovey Village Hall, Neuadd Dyfi, Aberdyfi LL35 0NR. The start is about 200 yards from Aberdyfi train station and the village car park; Harlech station is about 200 yards from the finish and provides a connecting train taking about one hour to return to the start area. Organisers will transport one bag per runner from start to finish. Compulsory kit includes a rucksack with a minimum 1 L water capacity (bladder or bottle), emergency food, a fully charged mobile phone, waterproof jacket, whistle, map and compass, a first aid kit, and a collapsible cup. Entry prices listed range from £45 to £66 and entrants must be 18 or over on the event date. The event is organised by How Hard Can It Be Events.
