Course, aid, and rules
The course follows maintained snowmachine trails with big ascents, fast downhills, blind turns, and views of local hills and the Alaska Range. Trail grades rarely exceed 10 percent, making the route rideable for cyclists. The trail is narrow and generally suited to classic skis, with a few wider sections used by skate skiers.
Mandatory checkpoints exist for the 55-mile distance at mile 26 and near Stiles Creek Cabin (approx. mile 35). Aid stations are at Colorado Creek Cabin (about mile 8) and near mile 16; stations offer hot and cold water, electrolyte drinks, snacks, hot chocolate, instant soup, baked goods, and a finish BBQ with meat and vegan options. The race requires a mandatory pre-race meeting and check-in before racing. It is a human-powered event: no dogs or motorized assistance, racers must be self-sufficient, and must finish using the same mode they start with. The race start is at Twin Bears Camp (milepost 30 of Chena Hot Springs Road); overflow parking is at the Compeau trailhead (mile 29.5) with a parking fee unless an annual sticker applies.
