Chena River to Ridge Endurance Race
The Chena River to Ridge race is held on maintained snowmachine trails in the Chena River State Recreation Area east of Fairbanks. The route climbs above the valley floor and follows ridgelines that provide views of the local hills and the Alaska Range. The trail includes long ascents, fast downhills, and blind turns. Trail grades rarely exceed 10 percent.
Racers may compete by ski, bicycle, or on foot. The trail is relatively narrow and is best suited to classic skis, though some short sections allow skate skiing. Cyclists generally can ride most hills when the trail is firm; occasional hike a bike sections are possible in softer conditions. Trail conditions can vary year to year with fresh snow or wind affecting firmness.
Distances available:
- 55 miles, two loops totaling roughly 55 miles
- 26 miles, one loop of roughly 26 miles
Aid stations and checkpoints are located along the course, including Colorado Creek Cabin and a midway checkpoint on each loop. Stations provide hot and cold water, electrolyte drinks, and a mix of sweet and savory snacks. The race is limited to 100 participants. The event is human powered only; dogs and motorized assistance are prohibited and outside assistance that advances a racer is not allowed. Racers must finish using the same mode of travel they start with.
The race start is at Twin Bears Camp on Chena Hot Springs Road. Parking is limited at the start; overflow parking is available at the Compeau trailhead about 0.5 mile away, and a parking fee may apply. An evacuation or unnotified self evacuation may incur a fee and further conditions. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
