The event is a long-distance fundraiser that routes runners from Sandbridge Beach in Virginia Beach south along the Outer Banks to the Cape Hatteras lighthouse and back, covering more than 200 miles. The out-and-back course passes three lighthouses : Corolla, Bodie Island, and Cape Hatteras : and includes the possibility of seeing wild horses in Corolla. The first and last roughly 20 miles are along beach terrain; much of the remainder is on sidewalks and road shoulders through the Outer Banks.
Support is the responsibility of each participant. The event does not provide regular aid; volunteers can remove participants who are unable to continue. Participants may not ride in a moving vehicle during the course; stationary vehicles may be used for brief stops but not for transport or course marking. Sleep locations are chosen by each runner. There are stretches of roughly 20 miles between towns without stores, so runners should plan supplies and support accordingly.
The event is organized as a fundraiser. One hundred percent of funds raised will be divided between Awareness N Action and Mission22, organizations focused on veteran support and suicide prevention. A limited number of in-person spots are available and some commemorative swag will be offered to participants. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
