About the race
The Tacky Sweater 5K is a festive Christmas-themed event in Norfolk, VA, held on Saturday, December 5, 2026. The event includes both a 5K run and a 5K walk and supports EVMS Melanoma Awareness and the EVMS Dermatology Student Group. The stated mission of the beneficiary is to provide the highest level of dermatologic care while fostering education, discovery, and service to the community.
Packet pickup is available the day before at Afterglow Brewing and there is packet pickup and late registration on race morning at the same location. The course starts and finishes behind Afterglow Brewing in the Railroad District and runs largely along the Elizabeth River Trail through the campus of Old Dominion University before returning to Afterglow Brewing.
All finishers receive a custom finisher medal. Awards are given to the top three overall male and female finishers and to the top three male and female finishers in each age group for the 5K run: 12 and under, 13-15, 16-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70 and over. Top three male and female competitive walkers are also awarded. Special prizes are offered for the top male and female tacky sweaters.
The event includes a post-race party at Afterglow Brewing with food, entertainment, a DJ, and a tacky sweater contest. Team competitions award a Tacky Team Champion Belt to the largest team and to the team with the fastest five cumulative times.
