Sunburst Races
The Sunburst Races is a long-standing community athletic event in South Bend, Indiana. Since its inception in 1984, the event has grown into the largest race in the region, attracting over 4,500 runners and walkers. The event serves as a fundraiser for Beacon Children's Hospital, specifically supporting the Child Life and Creative Services Program. This program provides art, music, and pet therapy to help children and families navigate the challenges of hospitalization.
Participants can choose from four distinct events:
- Half Marathon (minimum age 10)
- 10K Run (minimum age 6)
- 5K Run (minimum age 6)
- 5K Fitness Walk (open to all ages, including strollers)
All events start and finish at the Century Center in downtown South Bend. The race is inclusive of various ages and fitness levels, with children under five allowed to participate for free. The event also facilitates corporate teams, which are common for businesses and community organizations looking to promote wellness and internal engagement.
Registered finishers in all categories receive a medal. After the race, a celebration is held at the Century Center featuring a beer garden for adults, a live band or DJ, and a family fun zone with activities like face painting and magic shows. An awards program follows the races to recognize top placers across the different distances. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
