SPF: Shield, Prevent, Fight
The SPF 5K is a community running event held on April 3, 2027, at Walsingham Park, 12615 102nd Ave, Largo, FL 33778. The main distance is a 5K and participants may take part in person or virtually. Virtual registration includes a T-shirt.
The event promotes education about melanoma and raises funds in partnership with the Melanoma Research Foundation. Funds from participants support dermatologic research and dermatologic education.
Organizers highlight several melanoma facts: there are over one million Americans living with melanoma; Florida has the second-highest incidence of melanoma in the United States; sun protection and early detection are important for prevention. The event shares the ABCDE signs of melanoma for early detection: asymmetry, border irregularity, uneven color, diameter greater than about 6 mm, and evolving changes in size, shape, or color.
Onsite activities include an after-race gathering with food and activities and opportunities to learn about melanoma. Dermatology residents from Bay Dermatology will provide free skin cancer screenings. Registration opens September 27, 2026, and closes April 2, 2027, with a registration fee of $30.00 for the in-person 5K. Additional event details are provided by the organizer.
