Sourdough Starter Triathlon 2026
The Sourdough Starter Triathlon is a sprint distance event held at the Chena Lake Recreation Area in North Pole, Alaska. This event is organized by the Arctic Triathlon Series and serves as an introductory open water competition. The race is limited to 99 participants and requires a USA Triathlon membership for all athletes. The minimum age for participation is 14 years old as of December 31, 2026.
The course features three distinct segments:
- 500 yard swim: A single-lap circle around buoys in the shallow water of North Lake.
- 6.7 mile bike: A leg conducted on dirt trails and roads.
- 3.1 mile run: A counter-clockwise loop around the pond following a two-lane track to the river.
The event site is located at the end of a dike, accessible by crossing the Chena River weir. All transitions take place at the lake. Because the course is situated behind a locked access gate, entry is restricted. The organizers provide scheduled course previews in June for registered participants to familiarize themselves with the route.
Registration for the sprint triathlon opens on February 1 and remains open until the participant cap is reached or until the deadline on June 24. A waiting list is maintained if the event fills. Participants are required to pick up their own race packets, providing a photo ID and USAT card. Awards are presented to the top three male and female finishers.
