Event Overview
The Sound The Siren 5K Run / Walk is an annual community event organized by the South Orange Rescue Squad. The event takes place in South Orange, New Jersey, and serves as a fundraiser for the volunteer organization. All proceeds support the provision of free Emergency Medical Services to South Orange, Maplewood, and surrounding communities.
Course and Distances
Participants can choose from several individual activities designed for different ages and preferences:
- 5K Run/Walk: A 3.1 mile course that is USATF certified.
- 1.3 Mile Walk: An optional shorter walking route for those not completing the full 5K.
- Kids Fun Run: A designated running activity specifically for children.
The main 5K route follows a certified course layout within the local area. Because the South Orange Rescue Squad is a volunteer-staffed 501(c)(3) charitable organization that operates without taxpayer funding, the registration fees contribute directly to their operational costs for medical equipment and services.
Community Open House
In addition to the running events, the South Orange Rescue Squad hosts an EMS Community Open House at their headquarters on Sloan Street. This portion of the event allows the public to learn more about the emergency medical services provided by the volunteer members who serve the community without compensation. The open house is free to attend and complements the morning's athletic activities. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
