Somba K'e Backyard Ultra at Yellowknife Ski Club
This event is presented as the Territory's first Backyard Ultra and takes place at the Yellowknife Ski Club Chalet on Yellowknife Access Road. The course is a 6.7 km loop that must be completed within each hourly interval. A cowbell signals the start of each new hour and lap, and all runners must be in the starting corral when the next lap begins. The race continues until one runner remains who has completed the final lap, or until a 24 hour limit is reached.
Race categories include a Solo 24 hour Backyard Ultra, a Team Relay with up to four people per team and only one teammate on course at a time, and youth events for participants aged 18 and under. Registration includes onsite snacks, food and beverages, access to ski club facilities and the chalet with bathrooms and space for a camping mat or race supplies, a DNF medal or token for every participant, and a race t shirt available for race day.
Mandatory equipment listed includes a headlamp and adequate clothing. Outside assistance is not allowed except from crew at the starting area and only between the completion of a runner's last lap and the start of the next lap. Spectators and other people are not permitted on the course except in the starting area. Registration opens May 25, 2026. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
