Somba K'e Backyard Ultra
The event is the Northwest Territories' first Backyard Ultra and takes place at the Yellowknife Ski Club Chalet on Yellowknife Access Road in Yellowknife, NT, Canada. Registration opens Monday, May 25, 2026. The course is a loop of 6.7 km that starts anew every hour; runners must complete the entire loop before the next hour begins. A cowbell signals the start of each hour and lap, and all runners must be in the starting corral when the next lap begins. The event continues until only one runner remains who has completed the final loop, or until 24 hours have expired.
Mandatory equipment includes headlamps and adequate clothing. Outside assistance is not permitted on course except from any crew located at the starting area, and then only after a runner has completed their last loop and before the next loop begins. Spectators and other non-participants are not allowed on the course except in the starting area.
Registration includes onsite snacks, food and beverages, access to ski club facilities and the chalet (including bathrooms and space to set up a camping mat or lay out race supplies), a DNF medal or token for every finisher or non-finisher, and a race t-shirt prepared for race day. The event offers Solo 24-hour entries, team relay entries (maximum four people per team, with one teammate on course at a time), and youth solo and team options.
