SMHS Makin' Hay 10K & 5K
The SMHS Makin' Hay events take place at the Catoctin Creek Park and Nature Center in Middletown, Maryland. The courses traverse the farmland of Frederick County, featuring rolling terrain on country roads. Participants pass through agricultural areas and cross historic one-lane wooden deck bridges that span Catoctin Creek.
Participants can choose between two race distances:
- 10 km
- 5 km
The 10 km course is a rolling loop that includes a 0.75-mile section on an unpaved gravel road along Catoctin Creek. The 5 km course follows an out-and-back route starting at Catoctin Creek Park, proceeding up Sumantown Road, and continuing onto Paul Rudy Road before reversing direction. The 5 km route is entirely paved and includes a water stop at the turnaround point.
Both courses remain open to vehicular traffic during the event. While running strollers are permitted, the use of headphones is discouraged due to the presence of vehicles. Late starts are not allowed, and vehicular access to the park closes shortly before the first race begins.
Awards are presented to the top three overall male and female finishers in each race. Additionally, custom glasses are awarded to the top three finishers in five-year age groups. A specific award, the Mid-Pack Maven Award, is designated for the participant who finishes in the middle of the 10 km field. Registration includes a race shirt for those who sign up by the specified March deadline. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
