SMHS Makin' Hay 10K & 5K
The event is held at Catoctin Creek Park and Nature Center in Middletown, Maryland. Both courses run on quiet country roads that are open to vehicular traffic and pass through farmland and along Catoctin Creek.
Distances
- 10K: rolling loop on quiet roads, includes 3/4 mile unpaved gravel.
- 5K: shorter course on paved roads, crosses one wooden deck bridge twice.
The 10K route crosses two historic one-lane wooden deck bridges and includes rolling terrain. The 5K has about half the elevation change of the 10K, stays on paved surfaces, and includes a water stop at the turnaround. Running strollers are permitted. The organizer strongly discourages the use of headphones or earbuds because vehicles may be encountered on the course. No late starts are permitted.
Race shirts are included for registrations completed before March 31, 2027; later registrants are not guaranteed a shirt. Early packet pickup takes place at Charm City Run in Frederick on the Wednesday prior to the event. Race day on-site registration is electronic only; no cash or check transactions are accepted.
Awards are given to the top three overall male and female finishers in each race with no double-dipping, and top three finishers in five-year age groups receive custom glass awards. Event insurance may be offered during registration. Partial refunds via the registration platform are available up to 30 days before the event; after that, no individual refunds or transfers are permitted.
