Event overview
The SMHS Makin' Hay 10K & 5K takes place on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Catoctin Creek Park and Nature Center, 2929 Sumantown Rd., Middletown, Maryland. The event offers two distances:
- 10K
- 5K
The 10K course includes a USATF certification certificate linked in the event materials.
Course, awards and logistics
Both courses run through farmland and along Catoctin Creek. The 10K and 5K follow rolling terrain; parts of the route run on a gravel road beside the creek and use historic one-lane wooden deck bridges. The 10K crosses two wooden deck bridges; the 5K is entirely on paved surfaces and crosses one wooden deck bridge twice. The 5K is described as having roughly half the elevation change of the 10K.
Overall top three male and female finishers in each race receive custom awards. Age-group awards (5-year groups) are given to the top three in each group and are presented as custom glass. The 10K also includes a mid-pack award named the John Godinet Memorial Mid-Pack Maven Award. Race shirts are included for registrations completed before April 1, 2026; registrations on or after that date are not guaranteed a shirt.
Early packet pickup is scheduled at Charm City Run, Frederick on Wednesday, April 15, 2026 (afternoon/evening). Race-day on-site registration must be completed via personal smartphone; cash or check transactions are not accepted. Running strollers are allowed. The use of headphones or earbuds is strongly discouraged because portions of the courses are on open roads with expected vehicular traffic. Refunds: partial refunds may be initiated up to 30 days before the event; after that, no individual refunds or transfers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
