Event overview
The Skunk Ape trail race is a late-April ultramarathon held on April 25-26 in Ocala, Florida, at the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway. Distances offered are:
- 50 Mile
- 100 Mile
Both distances use a roughly 50-mile out-and-back course; 100-mile entrants complete the course twice. The event reports a total elevation gain of 1,562 feet for the base loop (the 100 Mile accrues about double that). The course traverses sand pine scrubs, pine flatwoods, longleaf pines, lakes, ponds, prairies, riverine hardwoods and the Ross Prairie Wildlife Management Area.
Course, support and logistics
The route follows sections of the Florida National Scenic Trail and paved trails in the Greenway. Trail surfaces include single-track, sand, roots, short climbs and some paved trail. The course is marked with pink ribbons and reflectors for the outbound route and pink ground-level flags with reflectors for the inbound route.
All aid stations, staffed or unstaffed, provide snacks and electrolytes (soda, gels, chips, fruit, salt tabs), basic first-aid supplies and women’s hygiene products; most sites offer hot food or coffee. Drop bags are collected at the start and may be placed at 49th Avenue and Pruitt Trailhead aid stations; 100-mile runners may use an additional drop bag at Ross Prairie. Crews have vehicle access to aid stations. The overall time limit for both distances is 36 hours. Awards include a finisher plaque for the 50 Mile and a belt buckle for the 100 Mile, plus event apparel and other swag. Campground options are available near the start, Ross Prairie and elsewhere in the Greenway. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
