Silent Night Fell Race
Silent Night is an out-and-back fell race to Chapelfell Top (703 m) in Weardale, run entirely in the dark over rough, pathless ground. The course is graded AS and covers 6.6 km with 370 m of ascent, reaching the summit above St. John’s Chapel.
Navigation on unmarked terrain is required. GPS devices may not be used for navigation, although devices that display distance, time, speed or altitude are permitted. Runners must provide verifiable evidence of completing two prior events that include off-path navigation, for example mountain marathons, orienteering events, or AL Lakeland-style races; trail races and short fell races are not accepted as evidence.
A map is provided at registration. Mandatory kit is extensive and will be strictly enforced; required items include a compass suitable for navigation, a whistle, a head torch and spare head torch, waterproof top with integral hood and taped seams, waterproof bottoms with taped seams, emergency food, gloves, hat, an emergency bivvy bag (not a blanket), and spare warm insulated clothing kept in a waterproof bag. A mobile phone with the race organiser contact stored is also required.
Parking and registration take place at Chatterbox Cafe, 11 Market Place, St. Johns Chapel, DL13 1QF. The event is organised by Durham Fell Runners and licensed by the Fell Runners Association. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
