Silent Night takes place on Fri 18 Dec 2026 in Weardale, England. The race is organised by Durham Fell Runners and held from the Chatterbox Cafe, St John’s Chapel, DL13 1QF. It is an AS-category night fell race on unmarked, rough and pathless ground up to the summit of Chapelfell Top (703 m). Minimum age is 18. Pre-entry is required; entry on the day is not available.
Course, navigation and requirements
The course distance is 6.6 km (about 4.1 miles) with 370 m of ascent. The route is out-and-back and run entirely in the dark. Navigation is required; GPS must not be used for navigation though devices may be used to display distance, time, speed or altitude. Competitors must provide verifiable evidence of completing two events that include off-path navigation, such as mountain marathons or orienteering events. Kit requirements are extensive and will be strictly enforced. Required items include a map (provided at registration), a suitable compass, whistle, head torch plus spare head torch, waterproof top and bottoms with taped seams, emergency food, gloves and hat, an emergency bivvy bag, and spare warm clothing carried in a waterproof bag. The event holds a permit and associated UK Athletics insurance from the Fell Runners Association. Teams and junior races are not included.
