Silent Night Fell Race
Silent Night is organised by Durham Fell Runners and is licensed and supported by the Fell Runners Association. The route is a 6.6 km fell race with 370 m of ascent that reaches the 703 m summit of Chapelfell Top above St John’s Chapel in Weardale. The course is unmarked and run entirely in the dark on rough, pathless ground, so navigation will be required. A map is supplied at registration.
Entrants must provide verifiable evidence of completing two events that include off path navigation, for example Mountain Marathons, orienteering events or AL Lakeland style races. Trail races, sky races and short fell races are not accepted as proof of navigation experience. The organisers state that kit requirements are extensive and will be strictly enforced.
Required kit in all weather conditions includes a map (supplied), a compass suitable for navigation, a whistle, a head torch plus a spare head torch, waterproof top with integrated hood and taped seams, waterproof bottoms with taped seams, emergency food, gloves, hat and an emergency bivvy bag not a blanket. Competitors must also carry a spare warm insulated top and spare full length tights in a waterproof bag and a mobile phone with the race organiser number stored. Parking and registration are at the Chatterbox Cafe, 11 Market Place, St Johns Chapel, Weardale DL13 1QF. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
