Silent Night Fell Race
Silent Night is an out and back fell race organised by Durham Fell Runners in Weardale near St. John’s Chapel. The route climbs to Chapelfell Top, which reaches 703 m, and the race is run entirely in the dark on an unmarked route over rough, pathless ground.
The course measures 6.6 km with 370 m of ascent. Navigation off marked paths is required; use of GPS for navigation is not permitted, though GPS devices may be used to show distance, time, speed or altitude. Participants must provide verifiable evidence of completing two events that include off-path navigation such as Mountain Marathons, orienteering events, or AL Lakeland or similar races. The event is licensed and supported by the Fell Runners Association.
Kit requirements are extensive and will be strictly enforced. A map is provided at registration. Required equipment includes a suitable compass, whistle, a head torch plus a spare, waterproof top and bottoms with taped seams, emergency food, gloves, hat, an emergency bivvy bag, and spare warm clothing sealed in a waterproof bag. A mobile phone is also listed among required items. The minimum age for entry is 18. Entry fees are listed by category, for example FRA member and non member fees.
