Silent Night Fell Race
Silent Night is an out and back fell race organised by Durham Fell Runners to the summit of Chapelfell Top (703 m) above St. John’s Chapel in Weardale. The course is 6.6 km long with 370 m of ascent and is run entirely in the dark on an unmarked route.
The ground is rough and pathless, and navigation is required. GPS devices may not be used for navigation, but devices that display distance, time, speed or altitude are permitted. A map is provided at registration.
Entrants must be at least 18 years old and must supply verifiable evidence of completing two events that include off path navigation, for example Mountain Marathons, orienteering events, or similar Lakeland or fell navigation races. The event requires extensive fell racing experience and strict compliance with kit rules.
Mandatory kit includes a compass suitable for navigation, whistle, head torch and spare head torch, waterproof top and bottoms with taped seams, emergency food, gloves and hat, an emergency bivvy bag, spare warm clothing in a waterproof bag, and a mobile phone with the race organiser number stored. Parking and registration take place at Chatterbox Cafe in St. John’s Chapel. The race is licensed and supported by the Fell Runners Association.
