Silent Night Fell Race
Silent Night is the dark festive cousin of the Chapelfell Top Fell Race. It is a classic AS out and back fell race that reaches Chapelfell Top (703 m) above St. John’s Chapel in Weardale. The route is unmarked and runs entirely in the dark over rough, pathless ground. The course distance is 6.6 km with 370 m of ascent.
Navigation is required. GPS devices must not be used for navigation, though they may be used to display distance travelled, time, speed or altitude. Entrants must provide verifiable evidence of completing two events that include off path navigation, for example Mountain Marathons, orienteering events, or AL Lakeland or similar races.
Kit requirements are extensive and will be strictly enforced. Required items include a map (provided at registration), a suitable compass, a whistle, a head torch and spare head torch, waterproof top with integral hood and taped seams, waterproof bottoms with taped seams, emergency food, gloves, hat, an emergency bivvy bag (not a blanket), and spare warm insulated top and full length tights in a waterproof bag. A mobile phone with the race organiser contact stored is also required.
The race is organised by Durham Fell Runners and is licensed and supported by the Fell Runners Association. Parking and registration are at Chatterbox Cafe, 11 Market Place, St. Johns Chapel, Weardale. Minimum age is 18. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
