About the race
Silent Night is a night-time out and back fell race to the summit of Chapelfell Top (703 m) above St. John’s Chapel in Weardale. The course is approximately 6.6 km with 370 m of ascent on rough, pathless and unmarked ground. Navigation is required and the route is run entirely in the dark. Use of a GPS device for navigation is not permitted; devices may be used only to display distance, time, speed or altitude. A map is provided at registration.
The organiser requires verifiable evidence of completing two events that include off-path navigation, for example mountain marathons or orienteering events; certain trail races and short fell races are not accepted as proof. The event is licensed and supported by the Fell Runners Association and is organised by Durham Fell Runners. Minimum age is 18. Entry fees shown include FRA member and non-member rates.
A comprehensive kit list is enforced. Required items include a suitable compass, whistle, primary and spare head torch, waterproof top and bottoms with taped seams, emergency food, gloves, hat, emergency bivvy bag (not a blanket), spare warm insulated top and full-length tights in a waterproof bag, a map (provided), and a mobile phone with the race officer number stored.
