Silent Night Race

The Silent Night Race is a festive out and back fell race held in Weardale. The event takes place entirely in the dark and is characterized by a route crossing rough and pathless terrain. Participants climb to the summit of Chapelfell Top, which stands at 703m above St. John's Chapel.

The event offers a single distance:

  • 6.6km with 370m of ascent.

Registration and parking are located at the Chatterbox Cafe in St. Johns Chapel. Due to the nature of the course and the winter conditions, this race requires significant navigation skills. The route is unmarked, and the use of GPS for navigation is prohibited, though devices may be used to track distance, speed, or altitude.

Because of the technical environment, participants must provide evidence of prior experience in events involving off-path navigation, such as mountain marathons or specific long fell races. Mandatory kit requirements are strictly enforced and include:

  • Map (provided), compass, and whistle
  • Primary head torch and a spare head torch
  • Waterproof top with integral hood and taped seams, and waterproof bottoms
  • Emergency food, gloves, and a hat
  • Emergency bivvy bag (blankets are not permitted)
  • Spare insulated top and full-length tights kept in a waterproof bag
  • Mobile phone

The minimum age for participation is 18 years old. The event is organized by Durham Fell Runners and is licensed by the Fell Runners Association. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
