The Raising Sickle Cell Awareness 1 Mile At A Time event is an annual community gathering hosted by the Sickle Cell Disease Association of Illinois (SCDAI). This event takes place during September, which is recognized as Sickle Cell Awareness month, and serves as the organization's largest fundraising effort of the year. The event is held at Hayes (Francis) Park in Chicago and aims to support individuals living with Sickle Cell Disease while honoring those who have passed away from the condition.

Participants can choose between different distances during the event:

  • 5 km (equivalent to 6 laps)
  • 2 km (equivalent to 4 laps)
  • 1 km (equivalent to 2 laps)

Registration is open to individuals and teams, with a registration fee that includes a commemorative event t-shirt and giveaways. The proceeds from the event are directed toward programs that provide direct support services, education, and advocacy for the sickle cell community in Illinois. The course is designed to accommodate various levels of physical activity, allowing participants to walk, jog, or run their chosen distance.
