About the race

The Shorebird Coast Run is an annual trail running and walking event held on 17 October 2026 at Rays Rest Reserve, 562 East Coast Road, Kaiaua, New Zealand. The event features multiple distance options over a flat, coastal route that follows the Hauraki Rail Trail along the Pūkorokoro/Miranda shoreline. Course surfaces are mostly hard-packed sand, grass, and smooth metal trail, with no significant hills and no road sections. The route passes notable local sites such as the Pūkorokoro Shorebird Centre, the Taramaire Wildlife Reserve pond, the Access Bay Train Shelter, and the Robert Findlay bird hides, traversing mudflats that host migratory shorebirds.

Aid stations on course provide water and electrolytes; the event operates cup free so participants are asked to bring reusable cups or purchase event cups. Additional event details: finisher medals are provided for the 5K, 10K and 21K. Dogs are not permitted due to the sensitive wildlife area. Food trucks and coffee will be available on site.

The Kuaka Kids Race is a themed 1.5 km loop for ages 4 to 12 that includes stations representing stages of a migratory bird journey and a goody pack for every child. Entry pricing varies by distance and booking date. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
