Hunua Hillbilly Ultramarathon
The Hunua Hillbilly is a trail running event held on Saturday 20 March 2027 in the Hunua Ranges, with an event base centered at the Upper Mangitawhiri Campground in the Hunua Regional Park. The event uses single-track trails through native bush and features plenty of climbs and scenic views.
Race distances:
- 60 km Ultramarathon (original course)
- 42.2 km Trail Marathon
- 22 km Trail Run/Walk
The event includes on-site camping at the Upper Mangitawhiri Campground, event-base activities and live country music from a visiting duo. Family-friendly features listed for the event base include games, an onsite pump track, food trucks, a coffee van, a swimming hole and the Kōkako Kids Dash. A spectator shuttle van is provided for supporters of 60 km and Marathon participants to two viewing points on course.
Aid stations are described as well stocked with supplies through the day. Finishers receive distinctive medals: a cowbell-style medal for Ultramarathon finishers and a Kōkako medal for Trail Marathon and 22 km finishers. The event donates to the Friends of Hunua Ranges, a group that supports the regional park and the Kōkako population. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
