The MTC Severn Challenge
The MTC Severn Challenge is a five day multiday ultra that follows the Severn Way and adjacent paths from the river source to the mouth, covering around 220 miles in total. The route comprises five individual race stages; each day awards a bespoke finisher medal that fits together as a jigsaw to represent the route.
- Stage 1: 26 miles - The Hafren
- Stage 2: 47 miles - The Severn Plod Ultra
- Stage 3: 59 miles - The Severn Path Ultra
- Stage 4: 57 miles - The Severn Way Ultra
- Stage 5: 30 miles - The Bristol Severn
Accommodation is provided at booked hotels at the end of days 1 to 4, with shared rooms as standard and an option to arrange single rooms at extra cost. One cabin-sized kit bag per competitor can be transferred between hotels; competitors accept liability for items in transit.
Check-point food choices include vegan and gluten-free options selectable at registration. Competitors who require other specific nutrition must supply labelled food bags for each check-point. Events are cup-free so competitors should bring a reusable cup.
Organisers provide GPX files and recommend their use due to variable undergrowth and route marking. Mandatory kit is enforced and includes items such as a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, map, compass or GPS, whistle, mobile phone, emergency food, and a basic first aid kit. Entrants must be 20 years or older. Teams must pre-register and contain at least three members. The reported finisher rate over seven years is about 25 percent. Competitors must maintain an average of 4.0 miles per hour or they will be withdrawn. Entry fees listed include a solo option and a combined Severn and Thames option for the same year.
