Scilly42 – The Marathon
Scilly42 takes place on Friday 24 September 2027. The route covers approximately 42 km across five of the Isles of Scilly, consisting of full coast-path circumnavigations of St Martin’s, Tresco, Bryher and St Agnes, followed by a final 5 km run on St Mary’s. The race is limited to 150 participants and the event is currently full; a waiting list is maintained.
The course is professionally marked and the broader event uses over 2000 bright flags for navigation. Inter-island transitions use tidal-aware ferry transfers and the organiser operates two boats, each with capacity for 75 runners. The terrain includes continuous undulation, rocky sections, sand and technical coastal paths; conditions vary between islands.
Scilly42 is run as a self-sufficient event: competitors must carry their own supplies for each stage and are required to start with at least 3 litres of water. There are no energy stations en route, though race first aiders are based at the quay start/finish of each island and toilets are located on every quay. Cut-off times are calculated on a pace of 8:30 min/km (13:20 min/mile). The route and stage distances may be adjusted closer to the date to reflect erosion or logistical changes.
