The Flying Fox Time Challenge
The Flying Fox is a 7 hour time challenge event held along the River Thames in Staines-upon-Thames. This format provides participants with control over their total distance, as they can choose to run or walk for as long as they wish within the 7 hour limit. The event is open to individuals of various abilities, including walkers.
The course consists of a loop along the river, primarily on tarmac and well-made paths with a short grass section. The route is fully signed and relatively flat. A standard lap is approximately 7 km (4.37 miles), though this may be adjusted to a 3.28 mile loop depending on local conditions. To accommodate various goals and age restrictions, specific turn points are provided at the 3 km and 5 km marks.
Participants can achieve several milestones based on the number of laps completed:
- 3 km minimum for official finisher status
- 21.1 km (3 laps) for a half marathon
- 42.2 km (6 laps) for a marathon
- 50 km or greater distances for an ultra marathon
An aid station is positioned at the start and finish of each lap, offering a variety of sweet and savoury snacks, including vegan options and drinks. All finishers receive a medal and a goody bag. Distance pins are also awarded to those completing a half marathon or further. The event venue provides indoor toilets, changing facilities, and a bag drop area. Parking is available nearby at the Bridge Street Car Park. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
