Event Overview
This event is Day 2 of the Dun Holm Challenge, with "Dun Holm" being the historical name for Durham. Participants can run for up to 7 hours on a course along the River Wear, which offers views of Durham Cathedral.
Course and Distances
The course is a trail run along the river and is fully signed. The standard lap distance is 4.37 miles (7 km), though this is subject to change to a 3.28-mile loop based on conditions. Participants choose how many laps to complete, with a minimum distance of 3 km. There are turn points within the lap for shorter distances.
- It takes 3 laps to complete a half marathon.
- 6 laps complete a marathon.
- 7 or more laps constitute an ultra-marathon.
- A 50 km distance is also available.
Event Information
The event starts and finishes at the Durham Amateur Rowing Club. An aid station at the start/finish area provides drinks, crisps, cheese, fruit, cookies, and vegan options. Toilets and changing facilities are available on-site. Every participant who completes at least 3 km receives a finisher's medal themed around Durham, featuring the Dun Cow statue. Finishers also receive a goody bag, with a vegan option available. Distance pins for the half marathon, mega-half, marathon, 50km, and ultra distances are awarded. Parking is available via nearby free on-street spaces or city center pay-and-display. Runners may leave a bag in an unsupervised area at the start/finish. Headphones are permitted, and runners are asked to be considerate of other users on the public footpaths.
Participant Requirements
The event has a minimum age of 12. Participants wishing to run over 45 km must be 20 years of age or older; those aged 18-19 are restricted to a maximum of 45 km. Race numbers are collected on the day at registration. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
