Santa Cruz Triathlon : Olympic Distance
The Olympic race consists of a 1500m swim, a 40K bike, and a 10K run. Athletes must review course maps and are responsible for knowing the route and any potential hazards.
The swim uses a rolling start with athletes entering the water in smaller groups at regular intervals based on estimated swim finish time. Swimmers start from the Main Beach area in front of the Boardwalk, travel around the wharf, and exit at Cowell Beach. From the beach the route continues up a path by the Dream Inn, through the parking lot, across the street, and along a paved path under the train trestle to the transition area.
The bike course departs the transition area onto Washington Street Extension and follows West Cliff Drive and Bay Street, then continues onto Swanton Boulevard and Natural Bridges Drive before heading out on Highway 1 to Davenport and returning to Santa Cruz. The bike uses an overpass above the train tracks for bike in and out. Riders should watch for the dismount area as they approach transition.
The run leaves transition via the path under the train trestle, continues up Beach Hill to West Cliff Drive, follows the pedestrian walkway, reaches a turnaround on Swanton Boulevard, and returns to Cowell Beach Parking and the beach.
The transition area is on the Depot Park soccer fields. Eating or drinking while inside the fenced turfed area is not allowed. Athletes must be body marked and wear their numbered bracelet to enter and exit the transition area. Course changes and final details are covered at a mandatory pre-race meeting on the main beach at Lifeguard Tower #3. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
