Weekend 9 Overview
Weekend 9 is a mountain endurance event held in the Howgill Fells. The route follows an out and back course that covers a distance of 25.5 km. This specific route features 1500m of total elevation gain, which is comparable to the elevation of the Yorkshire Three Peaks but over approximately half the distance. Historically, this terrain was utilized as the final test route for 23 Special Air Service recruits.
The course consists of a mixture of fell land, tracks, and footpaths. It is fully way-marked and does not require manual navigation, though a GPX file is available for participants. The event features multiple manned checkpoints. Participants must be self-sufficient as these checkpoints do not provide food or snacks. The staff at these locations monitor participant safety and progress. There are cut-off times in place for the event.
Available distances and categories:
- 25.5 km (Load Bearing, Runner, or Walker categories)
The event is open to individuals aged 18 and older. It features three distinct entry categories: Load bearing (weighted), Runner/Clean Fatigue (unloaded), and Walker (unloaded). Those in the load bearing category must carry specific weight requirements based on age and gender, starting from 20 lb up to 35 lb plus food and water. Participants in the unloaded categories are required to carry a mandatory mountain safety kit. Prizes are awarded for the first male and female finishers in each category. Finishers receive a patch and a drink at the conclusion of the event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
