Tactical Route in the Howgill Fells

The Sabre XXIII Weekend 9 is a sporting event hosted in the Howgill Fells, featuring a course that was originally used by 23 SAS for recruit training. The out-and-back route covers a distance of 25.5 km and involves 1500m of total elevation gain. The terrain consists of a mixture of fell land, established tracks, and footpaths.

The course is fully waymarked, and a GPX file is available for participants. While the route includes manned checkpoints for safety monitoring, these are not stocked with food or water; all participants are required to be self-sufficient throughout the duration of the event. Support is provided by a DS team, mountain safety team, and mountain medical team.

There are three primary participation categories available:

  • Load bearing - Requires participants to carry specific weights based on age and gender (ranging from 20 lb to 35 lb plus food and water).
  • Runner/Clean Fatigue - For those running without heavy weight, though a mandatory mountain safety kit must be carried.
  • Walker/Unloaded - For those walking the route without weighted packs, requiring a mandatory mountain safety kit.

The event is open to individuals aged 18 and older. Performance is recognized with prizes for the first male and female finishers in each of the three categories. All finishers receive a patch and a beverage at a local pub. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
