Event Overview
The Run Wild event is an annual running and walking fundraiser held at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak, Michigan. It offers three event options: a 5K run/walk, a Fun Walk, and a virtual 5K run/walk. All proceeds support the Ruth Roby Glancy Animal Health Complex at the Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Center.
Event Distances and Details
The available distances and activities are:
- 5K Run/Walk: A route that starts on 10 Mile Service Drive, passes through the neighboring Huntington Woods, and finishes inside the Detroit Zoo.
- Fun Walk: A non-competitive, 1.25-mile stroll through the Detroit Zoo with educational activities and treat stations along the route.
- Virtual 5K Run/Walk: An option to participate remotely from any location.
The event is sponsored by Michigan First Credit Union. Participants can pick up their race packets in person at the 10 Mile Parking Lot on the day before and the morning of the event. Virtual packets can be mailed for an additional fee. Race day registration is available on-site until 30 minutes before the start. All participants ages 2 and older must be registered.
Course and Logistics
The 5K finish line is located inside the Zoo, specifically in front of the Holtzman Wildlife Foundation Red Panda Forest. Strollers are permitted for the Fun Walk and at the back of the 5K. For safety, bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, skates, and pets are not allowed at the event. Due to road closures on 10 Mile Road for the 5K, participants are advised to arrive early.
Registration for the event includes a post-race celebration at the Main Picnic Grove and access to the entire Detroit Zoo, including the Fred and Barbara Erb Discovery Trails. A commemorative 30th-anniversary medal and T-shirt are provided. Participants also have the option to fundraise; those who raise $150 or more can earn free entry to the race.
