Run the Runways of Chicagoland's Oldest Airport
The Run the Runway event takes place at Chicago Executive Airport in Wheeling, Illinois. This athletic gathering marks the airport's 100th anniversary in 2026. Participants have the opportunity to run or walk directly on the main runways and taxiways of the aviation facility.
The event offers several participation options:
- 5k Run (USATF Certified and chip timed)
- 1 Mile Walk
- Kids Dash (Open to children ages 2-9)
- Virtual
The course is designed for accessibility, as strollers and wagons are permitted on the route. However, pets are not allowed at the venue. Parking for the event is located off-site only. In addition to the races, the morning features music, food, and various kids' activities, including guest appearances by princess and superhero characters.
This is a fundraising event where registration proceeds benefit local aviation scholarships. Because of its charitable nature, no refunds are issued and the event will not be rescheduled in the case of inclement weather. All race participants receive electronic timing for the 5k Run, followed by podium awards for top finishers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
