Event Overview
Run the Runway takes place at the Chicago Executive Airport in Wheeling, Illinois. The event provides a unique opportunity for participants to traverse the main runways and taxiways typically reserved for aircraft. This gathering serves as a fundraiser, with proceeds benefiting local aviation scholarships.
Course Information
The event features several distances and formats conducted on a flat surface. The primary course utilizes a single loop layout where the start and finish lines are at the same location. Available event categories include:
- 5K Run: A USATF Certified, chip-timed race.
- 1 Mile Walk: A non-competitive walking event.
- Kids Dash: Youth races featuring a 100 yard dash for ages 5 and under and a 1/4 mile route for ages 2 to 9.
- Virtual 5K: An off-site option where participants submit their own times and receive packets by mail.
Participant Details
Strollers and wagons are permitted on the course, making the event accessible for families. However, pets are not allowed on the airport grounds. In addition to the races, the event area includes music, food, and various giveaways. Specific activities are organized for children, including appearances by superhero and princess characters.
Podium awards are presented at the conclusion of the timed events. Because the race takes place on active airport surfaces, the event is subject to weather conditions.
