Rumble on the Ridge
Rumble on the Ridge is a backyard ultra style last person standing race held on a family dairy farm near Arena, Wisconsin. Participants run a short loop known as the Drifty Mile and must complete each circuit within 20 minutes. The race continues until only one runner has successfully completed every loop in the time limit and then finished a solo victory lap. If no runner completes the final lap within the limit, no winner is declared.
The loop length is 1 to 1.25 miles with roughly 250 to 300 feet of elevation gain per lap. Terrain is a mix of gravel access road, single and double track dirt trails, and prairie paths. Course direction reverses every four hours and the exact route is not published until the morning of the event. A countdown system using whistle blows, music cues, and a cowbell marks the start of each lap.
The old barnyard serves as basecamp with the start corral, aid station, crew tent area, spectator viewing, and restrooms. Crew tents are limited to 35 reserved spaces and there is a shared participant tent for drop bags. No aid may be accepted while on the course; aid must be carried or provided in the designated crew area. Poles are allowed after four hours and numbered tags must be worn at all times. Participants must have a running light starting at lap 36.
Driftless Endurance donates $0.10 for every lap completed to the planning and building of the Driftless Trail. Camping on the farm is allowed on the Saturday night of the event only and is limited to tents or camper vans without hookups. All participants receive an event t shirt and access to a stocked aid station with hot food and hydration products. Awards include DNF recognition and club awards for qualifiers.
