Rumble on the Ridge
Rumble on the Ridge is a Last Person Standing backyard ultra held on a family dairy farm near Arena, Wisconsin in the Driftless Area. The event uses a short loop called The Drifty Mile that changes year to year; the organizer publishes course details on race morning.
Each lap is scheduled on a 20 minute cycle. The loop length is between 1.0 to 1.25 miles with roughly 250 to 300 feet of elevation gain per lap. Terrain includes a mix of gravel access road, single and double track dirt, and prairie paths. The route reverses every four hours.
Race rules require runners to be in the starting corral when the cowbell sounds for the next lap. Runners who finish a lap after the 20 minute limit are eliminated. No aid may be accepted while on the course; aid must be carried or provided in the designated crew area. Poles are permitted after four hours. Running lights are required for night laps. A solo victory lap is required for the winner to be declared and if no runner completes the final lap within the cutoff, no winner is declared for that year.
The barnyard basecamp houses the start corral, crew tents, aid station, restrooms, and spectator viewing. Crew tent space is limited and must be reserved. Camping on the farm is allowed for Saturday night only and is limited to tents or small camper vans. Driftless Endurance donates ten cents for every lap completed toward planning and building the Driftless Trail. The event is capped at 75 participants and a waitlist is used if the field fills.
