Rodeo Trail Run of Austin : event overview
The Rodeo Trail Run of Austin is a multi-format trail event held near Spicewood, Texas, at Grelle Recreation Area. The weekend schedule includes a half-marathon, a 28-mile marathon ultra, a Backyard Ultra using a 4.167-mile out-and-back loop, and an eight-hour timed run on the same loop. Field sizes for the half-marathon and marathon are capped. The event is organized in partnership with Healthy Kids Running Series Cedar Park and is not affiliated with Rodeo Austin.
Terrain and course features include rolling dirt roads, exposed loose rock, short steep climbs and descents, and uneven footing with frequent grade changes. Aid stations are fully stocked. The Backyard Ultra runs as hourly out-and-back laps; runners must complete each loop within the hour and continue until only one runner remains. The Backyard is a sanctioned event with official result tracking and Path to Bigs qualification. The eight-hour timed run measures completed loops within the eight-hour window; finisher recognition is provided for those who complete at least three loops.
Participant items and recognition include a custom participant shirt and a rodeo-style finisher buckle for qualifying finishes. Runners in the half-marathon receive a trail-specific 12-week training plan designed for Hill Country terrain. Course rituals include a chute at the start, a halfway turnaround called The Roper's Turnaround, and a bell or cowbell to mark loop completions.
