Rockys Backyard Ultra III Edition, McLaren Falls
Rockys Backyard Ultra III Edition takes place at McLaren Falls near Tauranga on 28 Nov 2026. The event uses a repeated loop format: each lap is 6.71 km and must be completed within the hour to continue. Participants who miss the cutoff are recorded as DNF and the event concludes when only one runner remains.
The course runs through native New Zealand bush, passes waterfalls, follows lake edges, and can include glowworms at night. Each lap contains about 140+ metres of elevation gain. The format places emphasis on consistent laps and time management between efforts.
The event is self-supported, so participants are responsible for their own supplies. At basecamp between loops there is water, electrolytes, snacks, real food, sponsor-supported items, and a warm gathering point. Runners use the time between laps to rest, eat, pace, or prepare for the next circuit.
Entries are limited and tiered pricing is used so earlier entrants pay less. Every registered entrant receives the Rockys III Edition Neck Gaiter, which can be worn as a buff, neck tube, sweat rag, dust shield, or blindfold. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
