Turkey Trot - Rockford Road Runners
The Turkey Trot is presented as the oldest ongoing race in the area and a long-time tradition for many area runners and families. The event is held at Atwood Park, 7074 Ryberg Road, on Thanksgiving morning and is open to runners and walkers.
The course is a trail run. Participants should expect trails that are not perfectly groomed and normal trail obstacles such as tree roots, downed trees, walnuts, rocks, leaves and slippery slopes. The description notes there is no creek crossing on the route.
Timing is chipped and bibs should be worn on the front of the outermost layer of clothing. The race is run as a guess your time event and the use of timepieces or GPS devices is not permitted. Prizes including door prizes, turkeys and pies require the winner to be present. Results are posted online later on Thanksgiving Day.
This year the distance is again described as somewhere near 5k. Rockford Road Runners collect donations at the race for a number of local causes and encourage participants to choose a cause and add extra to support the community. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
