Rockaway Beach Triathlon/Duathlon
The event takes place at Rockaway Beach, Queens, with the transition area by the B95th Street Rockaway Beach Amphitheater. The swim occurs in open Atlantic water from the B91st Street beach ramp back to the B95th Street ramp. Water conditions can include big waves and strong currents. Wetsuits are optional because the water temperature is generally still warm around this time of year.
Both triathlon and duathlon formats include a 12 mile bike segment run entirely on the concrete boardwalk between B95th Street and B27th Street. Competitors complete two loops for the bike portion, six miles per loop. The boardwalk surface is described as flat and smooth; wind can affect riders, especially on the return from B27th Street.
The run portion for triathletes and duathletes is a 3 mile out-and-back on the boardwalk, starting and finishing at the transition area near B95th Street with a turnaround near B125th Street. Duathletes begin with a run along the boardwalk and turn at B115th Street where an aid and water station will be located before proceeding to the bike segment.
There are relay options where swim, bike, and run legs can be split between two or three athletes. The race is not USAT certified or sanctioned and a USAT racing license is not required. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
