About the race
The Red Mountain trail races take place in March on the dirt trails of the Santa Clara Reserve near Ivins and Santa Clara, Utah. The event uses a wheel-and-spoke design with four loops that all start and finish at the same central location; different distances combine those loops to form each race. The full 50K runs all four loops, the 30K runs three loops, and the Dirty Hurty half marathon (about 14 miles) runs two loops. Combined course climbing is just over 4,000 vertical feet.
Course details include four named loops with varied terrain and elevation gain: a 7.7 mile green loop (around 687 ft gain), a 5.7 mile blue loop (about 547 ft gain), a 10.2 mile red loop (about 1,768 ft gain), and a 6.88 mile orange loop (about 634 ft gain). The orange loop contains an unmanned, self-serve aid point roughly midway. The Cove Wash Trailhead is the primary, staffed aid station and also houses the timing/timers check-in station for loop splits and award eligibility.
Logistics note that vehicle access to the start is limited; participants are asked to use shuttle buses that load at Unity Park in Ivins. Restrooms and porta-toilets are provided at the start, finish, and Cove Wash aid station. Runners receive a short sleeve shirt, souvenir gift, finisher medal, and post-race food. There is a nine hour time limit for completing the course and timing mats record start and split times. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
