Red Deer Rutting 2 days - Ullswater
A guided autumn hike in the Ullswater and Martindale area of the Lake District focused on hearing and observing the red deer rut. The event is scheduled in October 2026 and offers single-day or two-day booking options with published fees; steamer fares and food are not included in the listed charges.
The route starts from Glenridding on the shores of Ullswater and usually includes a 30 minute Ullswater steamer trip to Howtown when weather permits, with a boat fare payable separately. If steamers do not run because of high winds, participants travel by road. From Howtown the walk follows grassy paths past St Martin’s Church, Martindale, then up the valley toward Dale Head and the ascent onto Bedafell, with potential viewpoints over the valley before descending to Patterdale and Glenridding via Boredale Hause. Organisers work with local estates and avoid ascending The Nab, observing deer from surrounding slopes and valleys.
Route particulars and equipment: typical route distance is 10–12 km with ascent around 450–650 m, terrain described as an easy fell walk with some boggy sections, easy rocky parts and a number of steps toward the end. Participants are asked to bring a rucksack, sturdy boots, waterproof top and bottoms, warm layers, hat and gloves, lunch and drinks, and a head torch as essential emergency kit for autumn and winter months. Binoculars and some spare kit are available from the organiser. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
