Lowther Lakeland Fell and Trail Race

The Lowther Lakeland Fell and Trail Race is a 13 mile event featuring approximately 1400ft of ascent. The marked course begins and finishes at Lowther Castle, located 3 miles south of Penrith near the A6. The terrain consists of approximately 3 miles of tarmac, with the remaining distance composed of open country on grassy tracks and roughly two miles of rough pasture.

The route climbs through Askham village onto the fell toward Heughscar Hill. From there, it descends to the Cockpit and across the valley of Heltondale to Butterwick. A notable feature of the course is a ford crossing the River Lowther. Following the river crossing, the path leads up Knipe Scar and continues north through the grassland of Lowther Park to Whale before returning to the castle.

Registration takes place at the venue. For safety, participants must be equipped with a lightweight raintop and full leg cover, which may be required to be carried depending on weather conditions. The event utilizes SPORTident contactless timing cards (SIAC) attached to the wrist to record times at two timing points and the finish line.

Participants may run with a dog under canicross style guidelines, provided the dog remains on a lead at all times. The course traverses fields containing livestock. Registration is restricted to individuals aged 18 or older and must be completed in advance, as there is no entry available on the day. Proceeds from the event are donated to Eden Valley Hospice.
