Event Overview
The Lowther Lakeland Fell & Trail Race is a multi-terrain running event held at Lowther Castle, located 3 miles south of Penrith near the A6. The race is organized by volunteers, with all proceeds donated to the Eden Valley Hospice. The event operates under Fell Runners Association (FRA) rules.
Course Details
The race follows a fully marked route that covers a variety of terrains across Askham Fell and the Lowther Valley. Participants must be at least 18 years old to compete. The course characteristics include:
- 13 miles with approximately 1400ft of total ascent.
The ground consists of approximately 3 miles of tarmac, with the remainder primarily on open country, featuring grassy and gravel tracks. Runners also traverse roughly 2 miles of rough pasture and must cross a ford at the River Lowther.
Route Highlights
The course begins in front of Lowther Castle and climbs through Askham village onto the fell toward Heughscar Hill. After passing through the valley of Heltondale to Butterwick, the route leads to a climb onto Knipe Scar. The final section turns north through the grassland of Lowther Park and follows a track above the river to return to the castle.
Equipment and Timing
The event utilizes SPORTident SIAC contactless timing cards, which are worn on the wrist to record times at two intermediate points and the finish line. Due to the terrain, trail shoes are recommended. Competitors are required to bring a lightweight raintop and full leg cover, which may be mandatory to carry depending on weather conditions.
Participation with Dogs
Participants may run with a dog in a canicross style. Dogs must remain on a lead at all times and must not impede other runners. The route passes through fields containing livestock. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
