Event Overview
Race the Train - Bury to Rawtenstall is a point-to-point trail run of approximately 11 miles. Runners start in Bury and head north along trails beside the East Lancashire Railway and the River Irwell, finishing in Rawtenstall.
The Course and Race Concept
The unique feature of the event is that participants race alongside a moving steam train. The train travels ahead, stops to change tracks, and continues, providing runners with the challenge of trying to keep pace. Weather conditions permitting, an alternative diesel train may be used.
For Spectators
Supporters have the option to purchase concessionary tickets to ride the train separately from race entry. They can cheer on the runners from the train as it travels along the route.
On-Course Support and Finish
The course features water stations and marshals. A cut-off time of 2 hours 40 minutes applies. Every finisher receives a custom-designed medal and T-shirt.
Registration and Awards
Registration for the race opens on the morning of the event. The event frequently sells out. Awards are given for: Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
