Event overview
Race the Train 2026 is a point-to-point running event organised by Trail Blazing Events in partnership with East Lancashire Railway. It takes place on 12 July 2026, starting at Bury train station (Bolton St, BL9 0EY) and finishing at Rawtenstall Station. The event starts on the sound of the steam train whistle. Minimum age for participants is 16 years.
Course and logistics
Runners follow trail paths north from Bury, running alongside the railway lines and the Irwell River for a distance of approximately 11 miles. A steam train runs on the same route: it travels south to the next station, changes tracks, then heads north and may overtake runners as it makes its way to Rawtenstall. Friends and family can travel on the train and view runners from the carriage windows; concessionary train tickets are available.
