Race the Train - Bury to Rawtenstall

Race the Train is a point-to-point trail run that follows trails beside the East Lancashire Railway and the River Irwell from Bury to Rawtenstall. The event features the sound of a steam train whistle at the start and a route that runs alongside railway lines and riverside paths.

The course is approximately 11 miles and is organised as a single point-to-point route. Runners attempt to keep pace with a steam train that travels ahead and pauses to change tracks before continuing north. In the event of unsuitable weather, an alternative diesel train may be used.

Supporters and family can purchase separate concessionary train tickets to ride the train and provide on-course encouragement. On race morning, registration takes place on Platform 3. The event has a cut off time of 2H 40M. The listed entry fee is £30.

Aid provision includes water stations along the course and marshals positioned to assist participants. Every finisher receives a custom-designed medal and a T-shirt. Prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female, first in each veteran category, and first male and female teams.

The event is organised by a family-run team that describes the weekend as welcoming and supportive for returning and new participants alike. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
