Prickly Pedal
Prickly Pedal is a multi-distance event on the Maricopa Trail with mountain bike and trail run options that start in Cave Creek and finish at Lake Pleasant Regional Park. Distances may vary slightly each year due to permitting.
- 36 Mile point to point mountain bike course beginning in Cave Creek in front of Flat Tire Bike Shop and finishing at Lake Pleasant.
- 15 Mile mountain bike sprint beginning inside the Pioneer Living History Museum and finishing at Lake Pleasant.
- 10 Mile out and back trail run beginning and ending at the 10 Lane Boat Ramp at Lake Pleasant.
The 36 mile course includes varied desert terrain with rocks, sand, mud, water crossings, rolling sections, and numerous short steep climbs and descents; some sections may require dismounting and hiking. The 15 mile route begins with several fast, relatively flat miles before entering more technical terrain and climbing near the finish. The 10 mile run follows Frogs Tank, Beardsley, Wild Burro, and Pipeline Canyon trails to Pipeline Cove and back.
Aid stations are located on each course with water, electrolyte drinks, sweet and salty snacks, and fruit; the 36 mile course lists two on-course aid stations plus a stocked finish station. Crews are allowed at start and finish only and pacers are not permitted for any distance. Drop bag areas are provided at start or finish. Medical staff will be based at the start and finish. Proceeds support the Maricopa Trail and Park Foundation. Parking and shuttle services operate from Lake Pleasant and group camping near the finish is available for a fee.
