Crown King Scramble
The Crown King Scramble is a point to point 50 kilometers footrace on dirt roads from Lake Pleasant Regional Park to the Crown King Saloon in Crown King, Arizona. The route moves from the shores of Lake Pleasant through the Sonoran Desert and scrub, then climbs into juniper and ponderosa pine in the Bradshaw Mountain range. The course begins near 1,700 feet elevation and tops out at roughly 6,520 feet, with a listed total elevation gain of 6,828 feet.
The first half follows rolling, maintained dirt roads; the back half follows rough 4x4 jeep trails with sustained climbing and some descents before a final downhill into the finish. The course is marked with orange ribbons with black polka dots and yellow laminated signs at junctions. Wrong way flagging and additional signage identify non race trails.
Five aid stations are located on course at miles 8.5, 15.3, 19.1, 22.2, and 27.3, with a finish aid at mile 31.1; stations provide water, electrolyte drink, fruit, sweet and salty snacks. Drop bags are permitted only at the aid station at mile 15.3 and at the finish and must be labeled and limited in size. The event is cupless; runners must carry their own refill container. Due to the remote, point to point nature, crews and pacers are not allowed on course. Shuttle service is offered one way from the finish back to the start when available. Awards are given to top finishers by gender and age category, and all finishers receive a custom finisher award. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
