Crown King Scramble
The Crown King Scramble is a point-to-point 50 kilometer (31.1 mile) footrace from Lake Pleasant Regional Park to the historic Crown King Saloon in Crown King, Arizona. The route moves from the Sonoran Desert up into the Bradshaw Mountain Range and finishes in a ponderosa pine environment.
The course begins near 1,700 feet elevation and climbs to a high point around 6,520 feet near mile 28.7 before a final descent into the finish. Total elevation gain on course is listed at 6,828 feet. The first half follows rolling, smooth dirt forest roads; the second half follows rough four wheel drive jeep trail with steeper climbing.
There are five staffed aid stations on course that provide water, Gnarly Hydrate electrolyte drink, fruit, and sweet and salty snacks. Aid stations are located at approximately miles 8.5, 15.3, 19.1, 22.2, and 27.3, with the finish at mile 31.1. Drop bags are permitted only at the midrace aid station (French Creek, Mile 15.3) and at the finish; drop bags have size limits and specific dropoff procedures.
Crews and pacers are not allowed on course. One-way shuttle service is offered from the finish back to the start; shuttles depart when full and may involve waits. The event is cupless, so runners must carry their own refillable container. Course marking includes orange plastic ribbons with black polka dots, yellow laminated signs at junctions, and wrong-way flagging for non-race trails. Medical teams are stationed on course and at the finish. Strict cutoffs are enforced at key aid stations and at the finish for runner safety.
