Crown King Scramble
The Crown King Scramble is a point-to-point 50 kilometer (31 mile) footrace from Lake Pleasant Regional Park to Crown King, Arizona. The course moves from the shores of Lake Pleasant through the Sonoran Desert and climbs into the Bradshaw Mountain Range, finishing in the town of Crown King at the Crown King Saloon.
The route rises from about 1,700 feet to over 6,500 feet, with a total elevation gain of 6,828 feet and a final descent into the finish. The first half follows rolling, smooth dirt forest roads; the second half follows rough four-wheel-drive jeep trail that climbs steeply into higher elevations. The course is marked with orange plastic ribbons, yellow laminated signs at junctions, WRONG WAY flagging on non-race trails, and additional pink signage.
Aid stations are positioned on course and provide water, an electrolyte drink, fruit, sweet and salty snacks. Five staffed aid stations are located at approximately miles 8.5, 15.3 (drop bags allowed), 19.1, 22.2, and 27.3, with the finish at mile 31.1 (finish drop bags allowed). This event operates as a cupless race; runners must carry their own refillable container for aid stations.
Crews and pacers are not permitted on course due to remote access; crews may go to Crown King to meet finishers. Chip timing and live split tracking are provided. Awards are given to top finishers by category and all finishers receive a custom finisher award. Camping is permitted in Lake Pleasant Regional Park; local lodging options exist in Crown King.
