Prairie Fire Race Series
The Prairie Fire Race Series is a set of spring and fall road races presented by the Wichita Sports Commission. The event program includes a full marathon, a half marathon, and shorter distances, and the marathon course is a flat, fast urban course that qualifies for the Boston Marathon.
The series began with the inaugural Prairie Fire Fall Marathon in 2010; the Prairie Fire Spring Half Marathon followed in 2013. Over the past 15 years more than 65,000 runners have taken part, with participants coming from all 50 states and more than 20 countries.
Upcoming scheduled dates listed for the series are:
- Prairie Fire Fall Races: October 11, 2026 (2nd Sunday in October)
- Prairie Fire Spring Races: May 2, 2027 (1st Sunday in May)
Event programming and participant services include race results, awards, runner information, vendor participation, training resources, and volunteer opportunities. For the 2026 fall weekend the event lineup is shown as a marathon, half marathon, 5K, and the Mayor’s Friendly 5K.
