Event Overview
The Portland Triathlon Club hosts a non-competitive training event at Vancouver Lake in Washington. This "mock" triathlon focuses on skill development and practice rather than formal competition. Participants can choose between two distance options on the day of the event. The environment is designed for learning, featuring demonstrations and specific instructional clinics before the physical activity begins.
Course Details
The event takes place on a flat and fast course with out-and-back sections for the cycling and running portions. Because the course uses a lap-based system, participants can determine how many laps they complete. For the swimming portion, support is provided via kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and experienced swimmers who accompany others in the water.
Distances
Participants can select one of two distance formats based on their training goals:
- Sprint: 500 meter swim, 10 mile bike, and 3 mile run.
- Olympic: 700 meter swim, 20 mile bike, and 5 mile run.
Educational clinics
The morning includes structured clinics to assist participants with technical skills. A transition clinic covers the logistics of moving between sport disciplines, while an open water swim clinic addresses techniques for swimming in a lake environment. A mandatory safety briefing is held for all participants prior to the start.
Additional Features
The event is open to individuals aged 18 and older. Registration includes course support and access to a post-event barbecue. A separate introductory session also occurs on the Sunday prior to the main date, featuring a course preview and a basic bicycle maintenance workshop focused on fixing flat tires.
