Port Oneida Run
The Port Oneida Run is an annual event held within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Specifically located in the Port Oneida Rural Historic District, the event features courses that traverse a landscape recognized for its historic significance. The area exhibits 19th-century farms and barns set against a backdrop of rolling hills, woods, and views of Lake Michigan.
Participants can choose from three distinct distances:
- 5 km
- 10 km
- Half Marathon
The routes consist of a mixture of rolling hills and level pastoral pathways. The courses are designed to take runners through scenic trails, including the area near Pyramid Point. As the event takes place in an "outdoor museum" setting, the district serves as a preserved historic landscape managed in partnership with the National Park Service.
The event serves as a fundraiser for Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear, a non-profit organization that has been active for over 25 years. Proceeds from the run support the ongoing preservation of the national park's historic structures and landscapes. Post-run activities are held on-site, where spectators are permitted to bring blankets or lawn chairs to view the event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
