16th Annual Port Oneida Run
The Port Oneida Run takes place within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Maple City, Michigan. The event courses traverse the Port Oneida Rural Historic District, a landscape featuring historic farms and barns dating back to the 1800s. All races begin and end at the Port Oneida Heritage Center at the Charles and Hattie Olsen Farm, specifically at the historic Big Red Barn.
Participants can choose from several distances:
- 5K (3.1 miles)
- 10K (6.2 miles)
- Half Marathon (13.02 miles)
- Kid's Schoolhouse Dash (0.25 miles)
The 5K is a flat course on crushed gravel and dirt roads, where strollers and leashed dogs are permitted. The 10K and Half Marathon both involve a combination of trails, gravel roads, and paved sections through rolling hills, including a steep climb on Basch Road past the Pyramid Point trailhead.
The event utilizes professional chip timing. Water stations are located approximately every three miles along the routes. A National Park pass is required for all participants, and runners are asked to clean their shoes prior to arrival to prevent the spread of invasive species. This race serves as a fundraiser for Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear, a non-profit partner of the national park. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
