Event
The Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon are mountain races held in Manitou Springs, Colorado. The event was founded in 1956 and is described as the oldest continually held marathon in the United States. The 2026 running is scheduled for September 19-20, 2026. The Ascent and Marathon are organized as two separate races; the Ascent became a distinct event in the 1980s.
Course and location
Both races follow the historic Barr Trail on the east face of Pikes Peak. The marathon course runs from Manitou Springs to the summit and then back to Manitou Springs. The Ascent finishes at the summit. The summit elevation is 14,115 feet and each race climbs about 7,800 feet in vertical gain. The course grade is not uniform and sections vary markedly. Runners will encounter decreasing oxygen levels as elevation increases, which raises physiological demands. Manitou Springs is located near Colorado Springs and offers lodging and services for visitors.
