NAV4 Pennine 39
The NAV4 Pennine 39 is a mountain trail event following a classic section of the Pennine Way through the Cumbrian and Durham Pennines. The route is approximately 37 miles long and travels through remote wilderness. Participants journey from Bowlees to Alston, passing several significant geographical landmarks including the Low Force and High Force waterfalls.
The course features a variety of terrain, including riverside paths in Mid-Teesdale and technical sections. Key locations along the route include:
- Cauldron's Snout waterfall
- Cow Green reservoir
- High Cup Nick
- Dufton Village
- Great Dun Fell
- Crossfell, which is the highest point in England outside of the Lake District
- Greg's Hut and Garrigill
The event is designed as a linear route. Logistics are managed via a shuttle bus service that transports participants from the event center at Alston YHA to the start line at Bowlees. There are two separate starts available: an early departure for those expecting to take over 11 hours and a standard departure for other participants. Finish times typically range between six and 14 hours.
Four checkpoints are located along the course to provide support. While the trails are situated in wild and remote areas, the navigation follows established paths. The event is open to both runners and walkers. Indoor accommodation and shuttle services from nearby train stations, such as Penrith and Langwathby, are available for participants.
