About the race
Pendle Fell Races is a traditional short fell race on Pendle Hill, using a course based at Barley Village Hall, Barley, near Burnley, Lancashire, BB12 9JU. The current senior course measures 4.5 miles / 7.3 km with approximately 1,500 ft / 457 m of ascent. The event evolved from the original 1956 route, which was 6.5 miles with 1,250 ft of climb and started at the Bay Horse in Roughlee; the Barley course was introduced in 1974 with minor later changes to avoid livestock on the lower fields.
The race is held under UK Athletics rules and is registered with the Fell Runners Association. Senior competitors must carry the FRA Mandatory Minimum Kit; a recommendation about kit is provided on the day. Entry is accepted on the day only with separate fees for FRA members and non-members. Prizes are provided by Pete Bland Sports and there are no team prizes.
Junior races take place earlier on private farmland and cover age-specific out-and-back routes from a field near the village hall. Terrain for all races includes track, field and fell; junior routes run toward Buttock Farm and climb toward the trig with turn-back points set by age category. During lambing there are strict no-dog rules at the start, finish and on the race route. Junior kit rules require jacket, hat and gloves for U12 to U18 and marshals will check compliance.
