Stan Bradshaw Pendle Round
Held every March to commemorate Stan Bradshaw, this event was devised as the successor to the Half Tour of Pendle to reduce erosion. The course climbs to the trig via Buttock Farm, follows the spine of Pendle, drops to Churn Clough Reservoir, visits Stainscomb (the former site of Stan’s hut), then climbs over the hill past Lower Ogden Reservoir before returning to Barley.
The route distance is 9 miles (15 km) with a total climb of 1,788 ft (545 m). The race is categorised BM and has a minimum entry age of 18. First-place male, first-place female and first under-23 hold perpetual trophies for eleven months. The event is held under UKA rules and is registered with the FRA.
Practical arrangements noted by the organiser include a limit of 300 entries, pre-entry and entry-on-the-day fees, a Pete Bland Sports van in Barley car park, and soup, cakes, teas and coffees available in the village hall before and after the race. A race map, an FRA matrix and a series of checkpoint locations are provided for navigation; the course start and finish are outside Barley Village Hall, with intermediate checkpoints at the trig shelter, Scout Cairn, Gate to Calf Hill, Woodhouse brook-wall, Broken Wall/Stile/Fence and Gate to Fell Wood.
